At least 22 migrants lost their way at sea on their way to Greece by boat from Libya due to lack of food and clean water. Among them there are at least 10 people from Sunamganj. This tragic incident has cast a shadow of mourning in different areas of the district.
It is known that many youths of Haor region dream of going abroad in the hope of a better life. However, many people are already living through brokers. As a result, a better life is far away, some of them have fallen into the hands of the mafia while going abroad, some of them are returning home in coffins and some of them are lost forever in the deep salt water of the sea.
70-year-old Abdul Gani of Tarapasha village of Sunamganj's Dirai upazila. Arranged family with 3 boys and 4 girls. But Gani's younger son's earnestness will go far abroad to restore the family's financial well-being. Desperate, the old father borrowed 12 lakh rupees and sent his son to Greece through a broker, but that son died in the sea. Saddened by that grief, the old father is sitting in front of the house with a mobile phone in his hand and is crying uncontrollably.
Abdul Gani said, sold the place and gave the money. I begged the broker a lot so that the boy would arrive in good condition, but it did not happen. Now the only thing I want is to see the boy's frozen body for the last time.
However, two other young men of the same village are sons of Abu Sardar of Tarapasha village of Kulanj Union. Nuruzzaman Sardar Maina (32), son of deceased Qari Islam Uddin. 5 youths of the same upazila died including Sahan Ehia (22).
10 youths from three upazilas, including 5 in Dirai of Sunamganj, 4 in Jagannathpur and one in Doara Bazar died one by one due to lack of food and clean water on their way to Greece illegally. This has cast a shadow of mourning across the district.
The uncle of a young man of Dirai killed. Arshad Ali said, my nephew left for Greece through a broker to manage his family. But that didn't happen anymore. He died before going to Greece.
The deceased Md. Rahul Mia, a relative of Nuruzzaman Sardar Maina, said that our children had to die by giving a loan of 12 rupees to the broker. What do we live with now? I want the brokers to be punished.
Dirai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sanjeev Sarkar said that the matter has been reported to the Deputy Commissioner.
Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ilyas Mia's mobile phone was called several times but no answer was received.
