Distribution of bakna calves to make fishermen self-reliant in Tanore

In Tanor Upazila of Rajshahi, Bakna calves have been distributed among registered fishermen to help them in alternative employment and livelihood.

At a program organized at the Upazila Parishad premises on Thursday (May 14) at 11 am, 18 Bakna calves were distributed among 18 registered fishermen. This was implemented by the Upazila Administration and Upazila Fisheries Department.

Upazila Fisheries Officer Saju Chowdhury presided over the program. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (Naima Khan) was present as the chief guest and distributed the Bakna calves.

Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Wazed Ali and BMD Assistant Engineer Naimul Hasan and others were present as special guests at the time. The Upazila Fisheries Officer said that this assistance has been provided to create alternative income opportunities for fishermen under the Fisheries Management Project of Jawoi Beel and neighboring beel areas.

The beneficiary fishermen said that after receiving the calf, they hope to become self-sufficient through raising it. The Upazila Executive Officer said that such initiatives are being taken as an alternative income source for fishermen due to the decrease in fish availability in the Beel area and this assistance will continue in the future.
