Dhaka, Friday, August 22, 2025: Police recovered the body of senior journalist and columnist Bibhuranjan Sarkar (71) from the Meghna River. He left his home on August 21. Like every day, he left his house in Siddheshwari in the capital for the office at around 10 am, but did not return home or reach the office. His family has filed a general diary (GD) with Ramna police station and the police are investigating the matter.
In such a situation, the Bangladesh Mofusal Journalists Forum (BMSF) has expressed concern over the government's failure to ensure the safety of journalists and fulfill state duties. They mentioned that incidents like Bibhuranjan Sarkar's are happening due to the lack of economic and state security for journalists.
In a statement sent to the media, BMSF Board of Trustees Chairman Ahmed Abu Zafar said, âJournalists are facing lawsuits, torture and harassment while performing their professional duties on behalf of the state. An unprecedented situation has been created in the country due to the torture of journalists through mob justice.â
In addition, BMSF has expressed deep concern over the slaughter of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin in Gazipur and blamed the inaction of the state machinery. They have demanded speedy trial and arrest of the criminals.
In this situation, ensuring the safety of journalists and the active role of the government in fulfilling state duties is necessary. BMSF has been active for a long time on the issue of the safety, rights and dignity of journalists and if the demands are not implemented, more stringent programs may come forward.
According to the latest information, the police are continuing the investigation into the disappearance of journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar and the recovery of his body.
