One of the top organizers of the 1969 mass uprising and the great liberation war breathed his last at 3:30 pm on Monday while undergoing treatment at the capital's Square Hospital. The veteran leader was 82 years old at the time of his death. His son-in-law Dr. Towhiduzzaman Tuhin confirmed the news of his death to the media.
According to the hospital authorities and family sources, Tofail Ahmed had been suffering from various complications related to old age for a long time. He was last admitted to the hospital on September 24 with pneumonia-related breathing problems, heart disease and physical weakness. At the time of his death, he left behind a daughter and numerous admirers and well-wishers.
This bright star of Bangladesh's political history was born on October 22, 1943 in Koralia village of Dakhin Dighaldi Union of Sadar Upazila of Bhola. He rose to prominence in student politics during the turbulent days of the sixties. From 1967 to 1969, he served as the VP of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU).
