Police have arrested Anwar Hossain Anu, former social welfare secretary of the District Volunteer Party, on charges of beating an elderly man named Mostafa Bepari (65) for not paying a donation in the Bolra area of Harirampur upazila of Manikganj.
Police said that Anu was arrested from the Bolra area of the upazila early this morning. He is the son of the deceased Fazlur Rahman of the same village.
According to local sources, Mostafa Bepari has two shops at the intersection of three roads in Bolra, which are rented out. When he refused to pay the donation, the attackers first locked Mostafa's shop. Later, with the help of locals, they unlocked the shop. Then, last Monday morning, Anu, his brother Nazrul Islam and nephew Nayan Islam together beat Mostafa Bepari and his wife Sahana Begum.
As a result, Mostafa's three teeth were broken. The attackers snatched a gold chain weighing a heavy weight from the neck of Mustafa Bepari's wife Sahana and one lakh taka with her. When the family members called 999, the police quickly reached the spot and rescued them and later admitted them to Manikganj District Sadar Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Harirampur Police Station Mojibur Rahman said that in this incident, Mustafa's son Md. Israfil filed a case with Harirampur Police Station accusing three people and 3-4 unknown people. Anu has been arrested and sent to court. A drive is underway to arrest the remaining accused.
