Baghaichhari (Rangamati) Correspondent:
Due to continuous heavy rains and landslides coming down from the upstream, severe flooding has occurred in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati. Various villages in the upazila have been flooded due to the sudden strong flow of water, leaving hundreds of families stranded.
According to local sources, most of the low-lying areas of Sajek, Marishya, Khedarmara, Bangaltali and Amtali unions have been submerged due to continuous rains over the past few days. Public life has come to a standstill as markets, educational institutions and roads have gone under water.
Meanwhile, several mud houses have collapsed and cropland has been damaged due to the landslides. Erosion has occurred in various places due to the rapid rise in the water level of rivers. Common people are running from their homes in search of safe shelter.
According to upazila administration sources, initiatives have already been taken to distribute relief materials in the flood-affected areas. Local public representatives are keeping a close eye on the people stranded in the water. Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Amena Marjan said that the flood situation is being closely monitored. Assistance will be provided to the affected families on priority basis.
Locals have expressed fear that if the rains continue and the water level in Kaptai Lake rises further, the flood situation will become dire.
