The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized two fishing boats carrying a large quantity of potatoes while smuggling them to Myanmar.
On Thursday (March 19) night, Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan confirmed this information in a press release.
He said that based on a secret tip-off, the Coast Guard Station Hatia conducted a special operation in the Meghna River area adjacent to Char Ataur at around 1 am on Thursday.
During the operation, 760 sacks of potatoes worth about 570,000 taka were seized from two suspicious fishing boats, which were being carried to Myanmar for the purpose of smuggling by evading customs and taxes.
At the same time, two fishing boats used in the smuggling operation were also seized.
It was reported that no one could be arrested as the smugglers fled after sensing the presence of the Coast Guard.
The process of taking legal action against the seized potatoes and the seized boats is ongoing.
The media official also said that the Bangladesh Coast Guard’s operations to prevent smuggling and trafficking through rivers and sea routes will continue in the future.
