Md. Shahjahan Bashar, Dhaka Correspondent:
The chief advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, is holding a dialogue with political parties one after another to deal with the current unstable political situation in the country. In continuation of this, an important meeting will be held with representatives of seven political parties at the state guest house Jamuna in the capital at 5 pm on Tuesday.
Earlier on Monday, he held separate meetings with leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP. It is learned that he first met with representatives of Jamaat, then NCP and lastly BNP.
The recent attack on People’s Rights Council President Nurul Haque Nur has created new tension in the political arena. In this situation, the government has taken the initiative to hold direct talks with important political forces supporting the July Movement. Therefore, this dialogue by the chief advisor is being seen as an important step to resolve the ongoing political crisis.
In a meeting with the chief advisor, leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) clarified their position on Awami League and Jatiya Party. The leaders of the two parties said that just as the political activities of Awami League have been banned, action should be taken against Jatiya Party as well. According to them, Jatiya Party has worked as an ally of Awami League in the past, so it is important to take similar decisions for both parties.
In political circles, Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s dialogue is being interpreted as the interim government’s ‘diplomatic attempt to resolve the crisis’. Experts say that the government’s decisions and actions in these two contexts – the absence and ban of Awami League on one hand, and the growing controversy surrounding Jatiya Party on the other – will determine the course of future politics.
Curiosity and interest in the political arena have reached their peak about what decisions will come out of Tuesday’s meeting with seven political parties. How effective this meeting will be in determining the outline of the next national elections and paving the way for political compromise is now attracting the attention of the people of the country.
