Former female MP from Lalmonirhat 3 constituency, Safura Begum Rumi, arrested

The Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Advocate Safura Begum Rumi, a former member of parliament (MP) for the reserved seat of Lalmonirhat-3 constituency and a member of the banned Awami League central committee.

Confirming the arrest on Thursday (April 9) morning, the Lalmonirhat DB police said that she was arrested from a house in Mohammadpur, Dhaka on Wednesday night.

Police said that under the direction of the Lalmonirhat District Superintendent of Police, an operation team of the District Detective Branch conducted an operation in Dhaka with the help of information technology and arrested her. There are five cases against her in various police stations including Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station, Rangpur Kotwali and Mohammadpur in Dhaka on charges of murder, sabotage and fraud.

Lalmonirhat DB Officer-in-Charge Saad Ahmed said that after August 5, 2024, she left Lalmonirhat and was in hiding in Dhaka and was allegedly conducting various Awami League activities from there. Besides, she is also a chargesheeted accused in the cases of Rangpur Metropolitan and Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Stations.
