A young man named Simeon Hansda Saikat (22) has been arrested for raping a young woman in Panchbibi, Joypurhat, by tempting her to marry him and blackmailing her by posting objectionable pictures on social media Facebook.
He was arrested in a joint operation by RAB-5 and 13 in the Bhimpur area of Upazila Bhimpur on Sunday afternoon, March 29, in a case filed by Pirganj Police Station under the Women and Child Abuse and Cyber Security Act. The arrested Simeon Hansda is the son of Suren Hansda of Bhimpur village of Upazila.
This information was given in a press release by RAB-5 Joypurhat camp on March 30 at 11 am. According to the case details, Simeon Hansda Saikat of Bhimpur village of Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat met the daughter (victim) of William Hemrom, a resident of Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district, through Facebook in 2022. At one point, a love affair developed between them. Through this relationship, Simeon took the girl to various places with the promise of a fake marriage and raped her multiple times against her will.
Finally, on the afternoon of January 14 of this year, Simeon went to their house while the victim’s house was empty and raped her again with the promise of marriage. Later, when the girl tried to contact Simeon for marriage, he proposed to have sexual relations again. However, when Simeon did not agree to that, he threatened to spread the offensive pictures on Facebook.
On March 5, she saw on social media that Simeon had uploaded multiple obscene pictures using the victim’s name and picture, written offensive words, added the numbers of people she knew, and humiliated her socially.
In this incident, on March 17, the girl filed a case with Pirganj Police Station under Section 9(b) of the Women and Children (Prevention of Abuse) Act 2000 (Amendment-2025) and Section 25(2)/(3) of the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025. Case No. 25/78. The arrested accused has been handed over to Pirganj Police Station for further legal action.
