Food assistance has been distributed to fishermen who have become unemployed due to the ban on all types of fishing in the Tetulia River sanctuary area in Rangabali Upazila of Patuakhali for two months from March to April.
These food items were distributed free of charge to 1,000 fisherman families in the upazila under the Hilsa Resource Development and Management Project (2nd Revised).
Each family was given 12 kg of flour, 8 kg of lentils, 10 liters of soybean oil, 4 kg of sugar, 4 kg of salt and 16 kg of potatoes.
Rangabali Upazila Executive Officer Nirupam Majumder, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Apu Saha and other officials of the upazila administration, and Rangabali Press Club President Mahmud Hasan Rajib were present at the food distribution program.
According to upazila administration sources, fishing is prohibited in the sanctuary area during specified times in order to ensure the safe breeding of Hilsa and increase fish production in the river. At this time, the government is distributing food items as an alternative support to fishermen.
