Police have arrested banned Awami League terrorists Khairul (35), Hashem Ali (56), Abdul Quddus (30) and Shariful Islam (28) in a case of grievous injuries to a BNP worker named Ripon (45) of Ishwarchandrapur village of Darshana Municipality under Darshana Police Station in Chuadanga.
The arrests were made early today (February 25) from Pura Para village of Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah district. The arrested are residents of Ishwarchandrapur village of Darshana Municipality under Darshana Police Station.
According to police sources, on the instructions of Chuadanga Police Superintendent Monirul Islam, a special team of police, in collaboration with the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of Chuadanga District Police, conducted a raid in Purapara village of Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah district on Wednesday morning and arrested banned Awami League terrorists Khairul Islam, Hashem Ali, Abdul Quddus and Shafiqul Islam, who were accused in a case of hacking and seriously injuring BNP activist Ripon. They were then handed over to Darshana Police Station.
It is worth noting that last Sunday evening, Ripon, son of Abdur Rahman and a BNP activist of Ishwarchandrapur village of Darshana Municipality, was entering the main gate of the neighboring Ishwarchandrapur Jame Mosque after breaking his fast and entering the main gate after praying. 15-20 people, including Awami League terrorists Khairul and Hashem, who were already waiting for him, attacked him. Then he was attacked with a sharp weapon by a mountaineer, seriously injuring him. When he fell to the ground after the attack, locals rescued him and first admitted him to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. When his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital that night.
According to local sources, political tension was prevailing in the area over the upcoming national elections. It is alleged that there was a fight between Awami League-supported Hashem and Khairul Kamri Gang and BNP activist Ripon earlier. BNP leaders claim that the attack was carried out in a planned manner due to this dispute.
In protest of this incident, a protest procession was taken out in the city at around 9 pm under the leadership of Darshana Municipality BNP coordinator Narul Islam Master. Leaders and activists of BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal participated in the procession. Later, they surrounded Darshana police station and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and exemplary punishment.
Darshana Municipality BNP Chief Coordinator Habibur Rahman Bullet said,
The attack on Ripon was planned. He was stabbed to death on his way to the mosque after Iftar due to political vendetta. We strongly condemn and protest this incident and demand the immediate arrest of those involved.
That night, injured Ripon’s father Abdul Hannan filed a case with Darshana Police Station, naming 13 people including Khairul, Hashem, Quddus and Shafiqul, and 20-25 unknown people. After that, different units of the district police conducted raids at different places to arrest the accused. Finally, 3 days later, on Wednesday morning, a police team with the help of the Chuadanga District Police Cyber Crime Investigation Unit arrested 4 people.
Darshana Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mehedi Hasan confirmed the truth of the incident and said that multiple police teams are active to arrest the other accused. He also said that there are multiple cases against the arrested people.
