5 arrested, 4 absconding in late-night raid on gambling den in Birganj

A special police operation in Birganj Upazila of Dinajpur broke up a gambling den and arrested 5 people late at night. Sensing the presence of the police at that time, 4 more people fled.

Police said that on Thursday (March 26, 2026) at 11:55 pm, a joint force led by Birganj Police Station SI (retd) Raihan Nabi conducted a raid on a wasteland next to the government canal in Mahadevpur village of Marcha Union No. 11 based on secret information. There, 5 people were caught red-handed while secretly setting up a gambling den under a bamboo bush and playing cards.

During the operation, 2 sets of cards, 3,600 taka in cash, 6 mobile phones of different models and a polythene were seized from the gambling den.

The arrested are – Monowar Hossain (42), Alim Uddin (55), Kiren Sen (40), Memanand (42) and Govinda Roy (38). In addition, the police said that 4 more gamblers escaped during the operation.
A case (No. 19, date: 27 March 2026) has been filed at Birganj Police Station under Section 3/4 of the Bengal Gambling Act of 1867. The investigation of the case has been entrusted to SI Dinesh Chandra Barman.

Birganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Saiful Islam said that such operations will continue to maintain law and order in the area.
