A huge amount of current nets and ghost nets (known in local language, actually China Duari nets) have been seized in a drive by the Kalai Upazila Fisheries Officer’s office in Joypurhat. The drive was conducted for three days on August 7, August 11 and today, Wednesday (August 13).
In the drive led by Kalai Upazila Executive Officer Shamima Akhter Jahan and Upazila Fisheries Officer Touhida Mohtamim, these illegal nets were seized from the side of the road from Hatiyor to Bairagir Hat in the upazila, Punat Hat, Molamgari Hat, Kanmona-Harabati Canal, and from both sides of the road from Karimpur to Punat Bazar. Later, the nets were burned in the upazila premises.
Kalai Upazila Executive Officer Shamima Akhter Jahan said that such drives were ongoing and will continue. Maybe the opportunity to publicize them in that way did not arise from the Fisheries Officer’s office or my office. However, this campaign will come to the fore on a larger scale. We want you to be aware and refrain from doing such things on your own.
