A court has sentenced a person named Manjur Elahi Kazemi to life imprisonment in a case filed in the case of kidnapping and raping a college student from the Chawkbazar area of Chittagong city. At the same time, he has been fined three lakh taka, and ordered to serve another year in prison in default.
Judge SM Zillur Rahman of the Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 announced the verdict on Thursday (February 26) afternoon. The tribunal’s public prosecutor Md. Akbar Ali said that the court gave the verdict as the charges were proven beyond doubt based on the testimony of six witnesses.
The accused has been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of two lakh taka for kidnapping, and an additional three months in prison in default. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of three lakh taka for rape, and an additional one year in prison in default. Both sentences will be enforced simultaneously.
The accused was present in the court when the verdict was announced. Later, he was sent to jail on a warrant of arrest on the orders of the court. The case file shows that on the morning of January 2, 2017, a second-year undergraduate (honors) student was abducted in a CNG autorickshaw while going to college through the city’s Chawkbazar area. Later, he was taken to the Patenga sea beach area and raped.
The next day, he was detained at a house in Dampara area. After the incident, the student’s family filed a general diary (GD) with the police station and the police conducted a raid and rescued him from Dampara area. Later, the student’s mother filed a case of kidnapping and rape with the Chawkbazar police station.
