In Dhamairhat, Naogaon, goats and other items have been distributed under the livelihood improvement project for the small-ethnic community.
Last Saturday, the Upazila Animal Resources Department and Veterinary Hospital organized the distribution of goats and other items among 255 small-ethnic communities, chaired by Nipa Rani, Officer-in-Charge of the Animal Hospital.
On this occasion, Eng. Enamul Haque, Member of Parliament for Naogaon-2 constituency, was inaugurated as special guests, along with Upazila Executive Officer Prashant Chakraborty, Youth Development Officer Kamruzzaman Sardar and officials from various departments. It has been learned from the Upazila Livestock Department that under the Integrated Livestock Project for the socio-economic development of backward small ethnic groups living in the plains, the beneficiaries were given 2 goats, 4 poles, 2 tins, 4 mats and 50 kg of food. . Although initiatives were taken to distribute improved breed goats, it was seen at the beginning of the distribution that most of the goats supplied weighed 5-6 kg.
The beneficiaries complained, “We are being given small goats by promising to give us healthy goats of improved breed. We are being cheated by giving 5-6 kg goats instead of 8 kg.”
Facing the onslaught of local media personnel and common people present at the distribution point, the authorities were forced to weigh the goats. Tension spread among the people present due to the low weight.
In this regard, Nipa Rani, the livestock officer in charge of Dhamairhat Upazila, said, “A total of 40 people were supposed to be given goats today. Of these, goats have been distributed to 26 people since morning. However, it can be observed that the weight of the remaining 14 people’s goats is low. Due to this discrepancy in weight, the distribution and all activities like today have been suspended.”
