DU Correspondent:
The High Court has postponed the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. The High Court bench headed by Justice Habibul Gani gave the order after hearing a writ petition on Monday (September 1).
According to the previously announced schedule, the DUCSU central committee and hall parliament elections were scheduled to be held on September 9. The writ petition was filed in the court alleging irregularities in the election process, some inconsistencies with the constitution and university laws, and violation of students’ fundamental rights.
During the hearing, the court said that the university’s democratic process will not be effective in any way without ensuring student participation and equal opportunities. The High Court also directed the administration to create an environment to conduct the elections according to the law.
The news of the postponement of the DUCSU elections has received mixed reactions among students. A group of students consider the High Court’s order to be a timely decision. According to them, the elections would not have been meaningful if held without proper reforms. On the other hand, many students have expressed disappointment. They say that after a long break, there was renewed hope for the DUCSU elections, but the postponement has created uncertainty again.
The DUCSU elections are directly linked to university politics and national politics. As a result, it is believed that various student organizations and political parties may adopt new strategies based on this postponement.
