A human chain and rally have been organized in protest against the increase in municipal holding tax that has been increased beyond the jurisdiction of Joypurhat Municipality without improving the quality of citizen services. The program was held in front of the city’s Zero Point Mosque Market for an hour from 11:15 am on Sunday (August 24).
Organized by the Conscious Municipal Civil Society and Green and Clean Joypurhat, the human chain was presided over by the convener of the Conscious Municipal Civil Society and the joint convener of the district BNP, MA Wahab.
The rally was addressed by former VP-businessman of Joypurhat Government College and BNP leader Matiyor Rahman, prominent businessman and former convener of Jubo Dal ATM Shahnewaz Kabir Shuvro, President of Green and Clean Joypurhat Rasheduzzaman Rashed, and educationist Principal Ali Hasan Mukta, among others.
The speakers at the rally said, many roads in the municipality are flooded, the roads are dilapidated, there is no development. Even though dustbins are provided to houses for throwing garbage, 100 taka is being taken from them every month, why is this? We do not know why the holding tax has been increased without developing the municipality. There is no lighting system even at the zero point of our district town, it is dark after evening.
The municipality authorities have not been able to show any quality work in the municipality till date. The carpeting of the roads that have been renovated recently in the municipality is coming off within a few days. The development work of the municipality is being done with very low quality, unseasoned materials.
Due to the limitless corruption and negligence of the municipality administrator, the people are being deprived of the general civic facilities of the municipality. Therefore, we strongly demand that the municipality holding tax be kept as before and that citizen facilities be increased.
