On the occasion of World Free Media Day yesterday (May 3) Sunday morning, Habiganj Deputy Commissioner held a rally in front of the office and circled the press club area and met in a discussion meeting.
In this, under the chairmanship of journalist MA Hannan, general secretary of Bangladesh Press Club Habiganj district Anwar Hossain Belal and president journalist MA Hannan and many others spoke at the meeting.
Bangladesh Press Club Habiganj district branch president MA Hannan said in his speech that democracy cannot be developed without media freedom. Fearless journalism for truth and justice can guide the society in the right direction. Journalists have to fulfill their professional responsibilities with devotion even in the face of various challenges at present.
They also said that the media does not only provide news, but also creates a strong position against injustice, oppression and torture in the society. Ensuring safety, freedom of expression and professional dignity of journalists is the demand of the hour. Public trust can only be gained through objective and responsible journalism.
Media acts as a mirror of society. From speaking out against corruption, irregularities and discrimination, the role of journalists is very important in establishing a transparent and accountable society. They called upon all concerned to ensure the environment of independent media. In this era of rapid development of technology, journalists need to be more careful and responsible to check the truth and falsehood of information or prevent fake news.
Besides, it is very necessary to emphasize on the training and ethical practice of the new generation of journalists. And it is very important to first evaluate those who go to the field and collect news and work in various print, electronic and online media. Because they have to take various risks to gather news.
Media workers have been tortured in different parts of the country. And many have faced false assault cases and jail torture while reporting or protesting injustice against powerful criminals. Still they did not back down. So they need to be evaluated first
Freedom of the media is one of the main foundations of a democratic state and the role of journalists in building a humane and justice-based society by publishing the truth is immense.
Journalists from print, electronic and online media were present in the said rally and discussion meeting along with president, general secretary of various upazilas.
