Kamrangirchar (Dhaka) Correspondent:
The name of Sheikh Jamal Government Secondary School in Kamrangirchar, the capital, has been changed to ‘Kamrangirchar Government Secondary School’. Local sources say that the reason for the name change is that the school’s old name was linked to a political figure.
A source in the Ministry of Education said that according to a recent decision, the names of educational institutions whose names are directly related to a political figure or party history are being changed to neutral or geographically based names. It is known that the name of Sheikh Jamal Government Secondary School has been changed as part of that process.
A teacher at the school said on condition of anonymity, “This is basically an administrative decision. Many people are discussing the issue locally, but the most important thing for us now is to maintain a good learning environment.”
While a section of locals welcomed the decision, many have expressed mixed reactions to it. Some feel that “Sheikh Jamal is a son of the Bangabandhu family, naming a school after him is not a political issue.”
Official comments from high-level officials of the Ministry of Education on this matter have not yet been received.
