Chhatak (Sunamganj) Correspondent:
A brutal attack on the police led by smuggler Shahin Mia took place in Tengargaon village of Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj. Two policemen were seriously injured in the incident. They are currently undergoing treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical Hospital.
Sources said that on the night of August 25, SI Md. Romen Mia along with his forces conducted a raid in Tengargaon village to arrest the accused in a regular case of Chhatak police station. During the raid, smuggler Shahin Mia’s brother Joynal obstructed the police work and at one stage they took the police members hostage. Later, two members were seriously injured by being hacked with sharp weapons.
Upon receiving the information, Chhatak police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan reached the spot with additional force and rescued the injured. The police immediately arrested four people.
It is learnt that the accused Shahin has been carrying out smuggling activities in the border area for a long time. A few days ago, he threatened to kill two local journalists over his mobile phone for publishing news about his smuggling.
Although he filed a complaint with the police station, no effective action was taken at that time, which made him braver. Since the incident, there has been panic in the area. A joint operation is underway by the police and the army to bring the situation under control. The rest will be brought under the law soon, said the officials concerned.
