Police have arrested two people on charges of raping a mentally unstable woman in Bhandaria, Pirojpur, and spreading her video on social media. They were arrested on Tuesday (August 26) afternoon, Pirojpur Police Superintendent Khan Muhammad Abu Naser said.
The arrested are rickshaw puller Md. Zahid (40), son of Mozahar Hawlader of Dakshin Sialkathi area of Bhandaria upazila, and Md. Ziaul Islam Jihad (32), son of deceased Ashraf Ali of the same area. Jihad works as the director of a computer training center, a fake clinic, and the Bhandaria correspondent of the daily Kirtankhola published from Barisal.
Police said that late on Monday night, Zahid forcibly raped the woman on a bench in front of Faruk’s shop on the bypass road (adjacent to the medical intersection) of the upazila at around 2 am. At that time, journalist Ziaul Islam Jihad recorded the incident on video. Later, he demanded money from Zahid by threatening to spread the video and finally uploaded the video on his Facebook ID.
Police Superintendent Khan Muhammad Abu Naser also said that immediately after the incident, the video was removed from social media with the cooperation of the Police Headquarters and BTRC. A case has been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Act in this incident. The victim has been sent for treatment and the arrested will be sent to court soon.
