Fifteen passengers were injured when a bus lost control and overturned at a place called Pantapara on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha.
The accident occurred in front of the Hamco Battery showroom in the southern bus stand area of the municipal town at around 6:30 am on Thursday (January 29).
Eyewitnesses said that a Kurigram-bound Mamun Express (Dhaka Metro-B-15-8545) bus leaving from Chittagong suddenly lost control in front of a sand dune in the middle of the Dhaka-Rangpur highway adjacent to Uttara Flower Mills and overturned on the road. The passengers in the bus were trapped inside.
As soon as the news of the accident was received, members of the Highway Police and Fire Service rushed to the spot. During this time, they rescued 15 injured people from inside the bus and sent them to the Upazila Health Complex.
Gobindaganj Fire Service Station In-charge Masud Rana said, initially it is believed that the bus lost control due to excessive speed or the driver falling asleep. However, the matter is being investigated.
Confirming the accident, Gobindaganj Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muzaffar Hossain said that although the accident disrupted traffic on the highway for some time, the situation returned to normal after the rescue operation.
