Dhaka Correspondent:
Ekushey Padak-winning journalist and Amar Desh editor Dr. Mahmudur Rahman has called the attack on Nurul Haque Nur, president of the People’s Rights Council and former VP of DUCSU, “extremely condemnable and mysterious.” He said it is the government’s responsibility to find out who instigated and instructed the attack.
He made the remarks while talking to reporters after visiting Nur’s physical condition at Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. The government has no chance of avoiding responsibility.
Dr. Mahmudur Rahman said, âI was very sad to see VP Nur in the hospital. He has been fighting against the authoritarian government for a long time. He also played a heroic role in the great July Revolution of August 5. It is extremely condemnable and mysterious that such a young political leader was attacked simultaneously by police and army members. The government cannot avoid responsibility for this in any way. Surely, this attack was carried out on the orders of the government, with someone’s permission or gesture. The government’s responsibility is to find out on whose orders this attack was carried out.â
He also said that the government must quickly investigate and unravel the mystery of this incident, otherwise more confusion and anger will spread among the people.
Amar Desh Editor said that he has heard that a judicial investigation committee has already been formed. In this regard, he saidâ
âThe people of Bangladesh want to know quickly who was behind this attack, who were the instigators. The government should quickly complete the investigation and publish the report. It cannot be prolonged.â
Describing VP Nur’s physical condition, Mahmudur Rahman said,
“Nur is still very ill. He has suffered a brain hemorrhage, several bones in his nose and jaw have been broken. His spine has also been seriously injured.”
He believes that such an unprovoked attack on a rising political leader of the country is not only condemnable, but also an expression of an anti-democratic mentality.
Dr. Mahmudur Rahman emphasized, “The government is responsible for this attack, and therefore the government must also take full responsibility for Nur’s treatment. He needs to be sent abroad as soon as possible for better treatment. I hope the government will take swift action in this regard.”
He also said that Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has already announced to send Nur abroad. However, he urged caution so that there are no bureaucratic complications or delays in implementing this decision.
âNoor should be sent to a country with advanced neurosurgeryâSingapore or Bangkokâas soon as possible. The government should implement this decision after discussing it with the doctors and family.â
The attack on VP Noor has created a new stir in the countryâs political arena. Various political parties, human rights organizations, and the general public have also condemned the incident and are demanding punishment for the culprits.
According to Mahmudur Rahman, this attack is not just on an individual, but âa direct blow to the democratic movement of Bangladesh.â He urged the government to unravel the mystery of this incident as soon as possible, reveal the truth to the nation, and ensure Noorâs advanced treatment.
