Students hold mass rally at Nazrul University demanding student union

JakkanEB (Mymensingh) Correspondent:

Students of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JakkanEB) held a mass rally demanding the formation of a student union.

More than fifty students participated in the rally organized on the university campus on Sunday (August 24, 2025) afternoon. During this time, they raised various slogans and reiterated their long-standing demands through wall writing and graffiti.

The students complained that the university administration has not taken any effective steps despite repeated assurances. They said that no student union has been formed here in almost two decades since its establishment in 2006. After last year’s movement, the administration had promised to formulate a constitution and announce a roadmap for elections, but a year has passed since then, but it has not been implemented.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam said, “In principle, we agree to the formation of a student union. A special committee has already been formed. Efforts are underway to draft it within the next week. Hopefully, clear progress will be seen soon.”

Student Advisor Dr. Ashraful Alam said that it is not possible to hold elections without clear policies. Proctor Dr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman termed the students’ movement as logical and said that the election will be held soon, subject to the approval of the UGC and the Syndicate. At the same time, Acting Registrar Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman said that the roadmap and election process will be announced once the policy formulation is completed.

Students believe that if the student parliament is formed, democratic culture, transparency and accountability will be established in the academic environment. Leaders of various political organizations of the university branch have demanded the immediate announcement of the roadmap. Former students also complained that due to the absence of the parliament, students are being subjected to administrative anarchy.

Folklore Department student Aishwarya Sarkar warned, “If the roadmap is not announced soon, a larger movement will be formed. If necessary, we will go on a hunger strike.”

The students have only one demand – to immediately announce the roadmap for the student parliament elections, ending the long wait.
