Bagmara (Rajshahi) Representative:
The banks of the Baronai River, located in the middle of the market in Taherpur Municipality of Bagmara Upazila of Rajshahi, have been turned into a dumping ground by dumping garbage. The garbage is being dumped in front of the market mosque on the side of the road. Due to the lack of any drainage system and lack of cleanliness, mosquitoes have established a home here. As a result, mosquito infestation is being created from here. Which is spreading to various areas including the mosque. And the buyers, sellers and pedestrians coming to the market have become sick of the stench. Which has created a serious threat to public health.
Locals said that after the day’s business of vegetables, fruits, fish, chicken and butcher shops at the Taherpur Haat-Bazar, the largest in Rajshahi district, built on the banks of the Barani River in the vicinity of Taherpur Municipality, all the waste – rotten vegetables, fruit peels, fish scales and the remains of the slaughterhouse – is being thrown directly onto the banks of the Barani River. As a result, mosquitoes have built their nests there due to the pile of garbage. In addition, pedestrians cannot escape the strong stench even by holding a handkerchief to their noses while walking. And since no maintenance initiative has been taken, it has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
However, the water of the Barani River is now being polluted due to garbage. In addition, garbage is still being thrown all day long on the southern side of the Bandha Ghat located in Haritala. The highway is also not left out.
Piles of garbage have been piled up everywhere. As a result, the entire municipal market has become a garbage dump.
When an attempt was made to contact Bagmara Upazila Executive Officer Mahbubul Islam, who is the acting mayor of Taherpur Municipality, regarding this matter, his statement could not be obtained as he was not at the municipal building.
