Iran elects new supreme leader, says Iranian media

International Desk Report:

Iran’s new Supreme Leader has been elected, according to the country’s media. Ahmad Alamolhoda, a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, said that the election has been completed and the new Supreme Leader has been elected. However, he did not reveal his name.

Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that Ahmad Alamolhoda said that the majority of members have reached a consensus, but some procedures are still pending. Now the rest of the process depends on the head of the Assembly of Experts Secretariat, Hosseini Bushehri, who is responsible for making a public announcement on the matter.

The Assembly of Experts is a council of 88 senior religious scholars in Iran who are elected by popular vote. In the absence of the Supreme Leader, the council is responsible for choosing the next successor.

Israel has previously threatened to target whoever is elected as the new Supreme Leader in Iran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a US and Israeli strike on Saturday.
